New Song "Been To War" Shows DMX Was Far From Done Rapping
The late DMX offers a verse that, although brief, also shows he was far from done rapping.
Almost a week since his passing, a new song has been released featuring the late DMX. The track, titled "Been To War," also features Swizz Beatz and French Montana, but it's DMX's distinct delivery that stands out most.
"I'mma march to the beat, I'm my own drummer / Let's get it on baby, we can go to war all summer," the rapper declares as he starts off his verse, his intensity matching the track's assertive production. Although brief, the verse captures what many DMX fans have reflected on amid his death: how he had one of hip-hop's greatest voices, and how that ferocity — paired with his great rapping ability — also made him one of the genre's most beloved rappers.
"Been To War" appears in season two of the Epix series Godfather of Harlem. DMX had reportedly completed a new album prior to his death.
"The album is classic. Dee and I, back when COVID was announced, we jumped in an RV with X and we drove to Nashville, Tennessee. We drove down because X was like ‘We can’t get stuck in New York. Let’s go start the album,'” Craig Brodhead, the rapper's mmanager, said in a recent interview with New York's FOX5.
DMX was rumored to be working on new music since his return to Def Jam in 2019 after a 16-year break with the label. His final album for the venerable rap banner was 2003’s Grand Champ.
