Around this time last year, a young Queens rapper named Deem Spencer released his debut EP sunflower.
That project gathered a considerable amount of buzz with the success of the somber single “Soap.”
After months of the attention, and the release of a new single. “eve’s titties,” the Queens rapper is back with another project. This time a mixtape called we think we alone.
Deem premiered the song on The Fader. With the premiere of the track, Deem talked to Fader about the inspiration behind the project.
It turns out it was the death of his grandfather:
“He passed away in January and I stopped writing altogether for about a month. That loss was difficult. It made me feel so small. I felt very young. The grieving process was heavy. Over time, I got back into the studio and tried to create a sound for how that whole winter felt. I worked with some talented producers and was able to create a bunch of nice pieces. I think the final product is pretty. I think it’s an interesting listen. I don’t know how it’ll feel to someone hearing it for the first time, but I hope people will appreciate it.”
Deem is right, the final product is “pretty.”
