Watch Black Thought Give A 5-Minute Ode to Hip-Hop 50 In BET Promo Clip

Continuing the 50th anniversary celebration to hip-hop, Black Thought has delivered a 5-minute hip-hop homage in partnership with BET.

Black Thought is continuing his Hip-Hop 50 homage. On Tuesday (February 21), The Roots frontman delivered a 5-minute freestyle to the storied genre, the visual filmed by Benny Boom in partnership with BET.

“This is a Love Letter to Hip Hop for me because hip hop is the love of my life,” Black Thought told Rolling Stone about the video. “No matter what medium that it is that you’re working in: if you’re painting a picture, if you’re writing a book, [or] if you’re writing a song. Those works of art that resonate the most are when you actually pour your true self into it.”

Throughout the freestyle, Black Thought, legal name Tariq Luqmaan Trotter, paid tribute to hip-hop, nodding to its 1970s Bronx, New York origins.

“To end the gang wars [is] what we started this thang for,” he rapped.

In another verse, he gave props to women in hip-hop and their resounding, current-day influence.

“They could never be kept in a vault,” he continued. “There be no Kim or Nicki Minaj without Peppa and Salt. I hope Cardi B and Megan thank Latifa, and Lyte, and L. Boogie. Superheros’ who were eager to fight.”

The 51-year old Philadelphia native will next release album Glorious Game with El Michels Affair on April 14. In time for Valentines Day last week, the collaborators dropped new single "That Girl," which followed their first single, "Grateful."
