Puerto Rico is still recovering from the damage caused by Hurricane Maria six months ago. To help the island raise funds for relief efforts, a number of artists recently came together for a benefit concert.
Titled Power to the People, the event took place this past Sunday and featured appearances from Black Star, Black Thought, Lupe Fiasco, Busta Rhymes, Jay Electronica, and others. Video clips taken by fans can be viewed below.
The event was hosted by former DMX protege Bazaar Royale and Angela Yee of The Breakfast Club.
Last month, Yasiin Bey announced that Black Star, the collaborative rap duo between him and Talib Kweli, would be releasing a new album this year produced entirely by Madlib.
“New Black Star with Madlib, Talib Kweli, Yasiin, coming soon!” Bey said during a Madlib DJ set in Denver, Colorado. “All Madlib, all day. 2018, Madlib, Black Star. Madlib Black Star.”
Following Bey’s announcement, Kweli revealed that it was a surprise to him.
“It looks like it might happen,” Kweli said to HipHopDX during a show in Boulder, Colorado. “I found out on the internet the same way y’all did. We’ve been talking about doing an album with Madlib for years. That’s been an idea we’ve had for so long, but for him to make that announcement…I didn’t know he was going to make the announcement.”
“He went to a Madlib show and he got hype. It’s not like we discussed it and said, ‘Ok, we’re going to announce it.'” Kweli added. “I got off the plane, I landed and was like, ‘Oh ok.’ It’s an idea we have been discussing for a long time, now we just gotta make it happen.”
