I woke up to like 99 missed calls That’s like 99 people I probably pissed off.
On December 21st, A Boogie wit da Hoodie released his sophomore album, Hoodie SZN. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, with 90,000 album-equivalent units.
Three weeks later, Boogie has moved up: the Bronx rapper now has the number one album in the country. And he got the honor in a particular way.
The rapper sold only 800 copies of his album — 823, to be exact, according to the New York Times. Those sales are exclusively from downloads (there were no physicals released.)
The album got the honor almost enterally due to streaming. The rapper had the equivalent of 58,000 in sales last week. According to the New York Times, the album was streamed 83 million times. The Times also reported that 823 is a new low for a number one album. (21 Savage previously held the record: his I Am > I Was album sold 3,481 copies while having 84 million streams.
It’s a stark reminder of how different the music industry is now. Shout out A Boogie, though.
