Philadelphia natives (or anybody who's driven through the city limits, really) already know that the City of Brotherly Love is the "America Starts Here" spot. Appropriately, it's also the #AREACODES-starts-here spot since our inaugural edition of the new Okayplayer-curated DJ series for Samsung is dedicated body and Philly soul to the 215 area code. We couldn't think of a better illedelph ambassador to put it on for his city than DJ Matthew Law and he kicked the series off in fine style with a mix heavy on the Bilal, Boyz II Men and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Matt undoubtedly got creative with the concept--including some unique edits and remixes of your favorite tracks--say Kendrick Lamar's "Alright"--by fellow Philly representers like DJ Sega. But any amateur or professional historian of illa-fifth dynamite will be gratified to see that the mix also hits all the familiar Philly corners you'd want in a 215 set, from The O'Jays to The Roots. Scroll down to listen and get the complete tracklist.
Then get ready for the next installment in our series featuring DJ Still Life of Str8 West Coastin fame, repping for the 415 Area Code (that's San Francisco for you non-Cali types--event details below).
The best part of #AREACODES is that if you're in the 212, you can play too. Come hear Still Life's set live within Samsung's (mind-blowing) 837 space, located at 837 Washington in the hustling West Side locale of Manhattan that we call the meatpacking district (even though it's more of an arts & culture hub than anything, these days) and wander through the brain-rearranging Virtual Reality tunnel/installation by Black Egg and Kenzo Digital while you go dumb to the sounds of SF.
