LeBron James Trolls Fans With ‘The Second Decision’

Fans and media speculated whether the Los Angeles Lakers star was announcing his retirement from the NBA, sparking rumors, online debate, and widespread social media frenzy.

LeBron James got fans in a flurry after he dropped a teaser Monday on social media about his upcoming "Second Decision.” The title referenced the Lakers star’s infamous 2010 announcement special when he went public with his decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers to sign with the Miami Heat. The teaser led to widespread speculation about whether or not he would be announcing his intentions to retire immediately or after this season.

It turns out — it was just an ad.

On Tuesday morning, fans and commentators got the answer. LeBron's "Second Decision" was part of a Hennessy advertisement. Hennessy announced that it will be releasing a limited edition orange bottle featuring James’ name on the label and his signature “crowning” gesture — a nod to his “King James” moniker. “Where the first moment marked a pivotal career move, this second decision celebrates a creative reunion and shared cultural legacy,” Hennessy says in the official release.

“This fall, I’m going to be taking my talents to Hennessy V.S.O.P,” James says in the ad — another nod to “The Decision” controversy from a decade and a half earlier and his famous “I’m taking my talents to South Beach” line.

The Hennessy ad was originally intended to come out at noon Eastern, but the cognac brand announced things about 90 minutes ahead of schedule, which they chalked up to James’ training schedule for the day changing at the last minute.
