If there was any doubt as to whether Kendrick Lamar could compete with perennial chart-toppers, DAMN. laid those to rest after about a month. The fourth studio album from the Compton rapper spent the three weeks following its release as the number 1 album on Billboard's Top 200 chart.
DAMN. wouldn't dip lower than the top 3 for another eleven weeks, only falling out of the top 5 last month after spending 21 weeks up there in the commercially viable cloud amongst the Ed Sheerans and Drakes of pop music. Now, it appears he's on the cusp toppling the Toronto powerhouse's 30-week 2016 stretch. With this week's report, DAMN. is currently at number 9 on the Billboard 200 chart, its lowest position since release, and with the imminent arrival of Taylor Swift's new album, it could be the case that it slips even further out of the winner's circle. But it shouldn't take more than another dose of DAMN. cinematics a la Dave Free and The Little Homies to disrupt that pop darling's roll-out.
Time will tell, though. Revisit Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. on Spotify below and scroll on for a week-by-week breakdown of the album's chart performance via Complex.
