How to Be Outside, Inside Featuring JWords
Come along on a Brooklyn tour with a DJ, vocalist and producer known for consistently vibing at a higher frequency.
For this weekend’s edition, we’re tapping in with the highly respected Brooklyn DJ, producer, and vocalist, JWords. She's been described by Pitchfork as “one of the underground’s most exciting producers,” and rightfully so. Her music melds uptempo electronic, house and dance influences into an addictive, NYC-channeling, head-nodding mix.
She released her debut solo LP, Self-Connection, in 2022, and also holds down a monthly residency at The Lot Radio. Her new album, Sound Therapy, drops in May, but you can already listen to the first single “Lush” here.
Her favorite NYC relaxation activities include touching grass in spacious Brooklyn parks, lounging in cozy cafes, and enjoying French-inspired cuisine in Flatbush. Check out her picks below.
Okayplayer: Where do you go in NYC when you want to be outside, without being outside?
JWords: Definitely Prospect Park, it's obviously very outside, but it's such a wonderful place. It's very peaceful and everyone that’s usually at the park also seems at peace. Prospect Park is definitely my go-to. Another spot I feel this way about is Sweet Sundays in Flatbush. It seems small when walking in, but opens up to a big space for sitting and lounging. One more place would have to be Fort Greene Park — it's a smaller park than Prospect, but with so much grass that it's fun to lay a blanket and just vibe out.
Where do you go when you want to be around people but not with people?
I personally like to go to The Lot Radio. There is so much good food around. What I like to do is grab some food, bring it to the lot, eat it outdoors, bring a friend or two, and just listen to some good music. They have refreshments and I can smoke my lil spliff out there after I'm done eating — it's just perfection. Also, I would have to say Nowadays, specifically during Dweller; even though it's cold out, it's fun to dance, hang with friends and then go to the backyard, smoke, hang and be around the campfire. It's a unique experience.
What does your perfect NYC day look like?
Well lately, my perfect NYC day is take a nice long walk around Prospect Park, then have either lunch or dinner at Risbo, this wonderful restaurant on Flatbush Ave that serves French-inspired dishes. It's simple, but it's how I’ve been spending my free time!
