Crystal Caines is a Harlem creative who dons many different hats: producer, engineer, rapper and singer. Her production credits include a slew of respected artists and lyricists: Ransom, Dave East, A$AP Ferg, BBYMUTHA and Bia, just to name a few. The diverse range of talent she’s worked with is reflected in how she likes to spend her downtime relaxing and rejuvenating.

She’s into arcades, museums, city parks, gym time (with no distractions), and of course, the recording studio, where all the sonic magic happens. Check out her picks below.

Okayplayer: Where do you go in NYC when you want to be outside without being outside?

Crystal Caines: Tree House Cafe — It’s a cozy, greenhouse-style space that gives you an outdoor feel while still being indoors. Seating can be limited, but it’s a great spot if you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with infused teas. Also, Equinox or a private lounge — both offer a social environment while still allowing you to stay focused on yourself. You’re around energy, but not overwhelmed by it. I also like the Intergalactic Arts Collective and other NYC art galleries. I love immersive pop-ups and curated art spaces. They give you that open, creative energy without actually being outdoors.

Where do you go when you want to be around people but not with people?

Arcades are perfect for being in a lively environment while still doing your own thing. The Museum of Modern Art — museums, especially rotating exhibits and pop-ups, let you move at your own pace while surrounded by others. Riverbank State Park, the greenery, open space and Hudson River views make it easy to be present without feeling crowded.

What does your perfect NYC day look like?

My perfect day starts the moment I wake up. I head straight to the gym, no distractions, and spend about an hour and a half focused primarily on cardio. That physical discipline sets the tone for everything that follows. Afterward, I head home and shift into creative mode, building new ideas, whether that’s starting a beat from scratch or collaborating with producers I work closely with. The energy from the gym naturally carries into the music. At some point, I’ll stop by Fumo Upper West Side for their vegan pizza or salmon pasta, both are standout favorites.

No matter how the day unfolds, I almost always end up back in the studio.

Most nights, you can find me at MBO Studios or Manhattan Beach Recording. That’s really home base for me, it’s where everything comes together.
