Ahead of the European leg of a world tour, Sampha returned a few weeks back on a selection from a long-postponed compilation from XL Recordings head, Richard Russell's Close But Not Quite. Please excuse the late pass, but the title track, on which the UK singer is featured, is a proper and particularly soulful concoction that warps between the canon's past, present and future with a hauntingly good Curtis Mayfield sample ("The Makings Of You") that tenderly and effectively places the legend in 2017 with all the grace and sweetness of his 1970 ballad.
