Millions of people have heard Flying Lotus' work without even realizing it.
During a recent episode of The Almanac of Rap, the producer reflected on creating Apple's "Daybreak" and "Chalet" ringtones, which have been featured on iPhones since 2019. When asked by host Donwill which artist he'd choose to turn one of the ringtone compositions into a full song, Flying Lotus admitted he'd never actually considered the question before.
"Freddie Gibbs would go hard on that," he said.
Donwill specifically pointed to "Daybreak," asking Flying Lotus to imagine who he'd want to hear on the record if it ever evolved beyond a ringtone.
"No one would ever ask me that," Flying Lotus replied. "So I'm caught way off guard."
After thinking about it, he landed on Gibbs.
While the collaboration remains hypothetical, the pairing isn't hard to imagine. Flying Lotus' off-kilter production and Gibbs' sharp delivery have both existed outside of hip-hop's mainstream, making the producer's answer a fitting choice.
Flying Lotus is also gearing up to release a new EP, titled Big Mama — no relation to Latto, in case you were wondering.
