Esperanza Spalding is a favorite of ours as you're probably already aware of. We named her latest album Emily's D+Evolution one of the best releases of 2016 so far, writing:
But just in case you don't believe us (for some strange reason) the talented multi-instrumentalist and singer is embarking on a tour soon that includes a handful of stops across the country. The tour begins on August 13 at the Richmond Jazz Festival in Richmond, Virginia, followed by performances in Nashville, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Chicago.
"Esperanza Spalding's virtuosity is undeniable. But on D+Evolution it's put front and center: a fearless 12 song album that shows Spalding going in so many musical directions at once, built on a foundation of funk. Contextually, D+Evolution was something of a rebirth for Spalding. After 2012's Radio Music Society she took two years off from creating music. 'See this pretty girl / Watch this pretty girl flow,' she sings confidently on D+Evolution opener 'Good Lava.' Time paid off; she came back stronger than ever and it's evident as soon as the album begins.
In Prince's passing D+Evolution feels even more important than it already was, because you can hear his influence throughout — not just musically but in the fearlessness and freedom of it all. Spalding has and will continue to fight for uncontrolled creative expression, and D+Evolution is a testament to that."
