Mayor Eric Adams’ campaign for re-election has come to an end.
On Sunday afternoon, Adams used an X post to announce that he was dropping out of the election. After beginning the video with an acknowledgement of his own journey to the mayoral office, Adams explained his reasoning for backing out of the race.
In the video, he says that, “despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my reelection campaign, the constant media speculation about my future and the campaign finance board’s decision to withhold millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious campaign.”
From there, Adams laid out what he believed to be the core goals of his campaign for re-election to the office he’s held since being elected in November 2021.
“This campaign was for the underserved, the marginalized, the abandoned and betrayed by government,” Adams explained. “Since then, it has been my honor to be your mayor, and I’m proud to say that we took that victory four years ago and turned it into action, making this city better for those who have been failed by government.”
The decision from Adams comes after a Manhattan federal judge issued an order to add the city’s Campaign Finance Board as an interested party in the now-dismissed corruption matter. The CFB asked to be added so it could review the case before deciding whether to award matching funds to the Adams campaign.
Judge Dale Ho’s order granting the request made clear to the mayor and his campaign advisers that it would be unlikely they would receive public money to match the nearly $4 million Adams has raised.
In September 2024, Adams was indicted on five counts in an alleged long-standing conspiracy connected to what prosecutors alleged were illegal campaign contributions, improper benefits, and an attempted cover-up.
This news now leaves Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa as the leading candidates for NYC’s mayoral office. The election is set to take place in November.
According to ABC News, it is too late for Adams’ name to be removed from the ballot. Jim Walden, who also suspended his campaign and has endorsed Cuomo, will also remain on the ballot.
