Ebro Darden Says Eminem Treats the Rap Genre Like Black People Treat Life

Ebro later attempted to clarify his comments, differentiating between success and respect.

Last Friday, Eminem released a surprise album, Music to Be Murdered By. In the wake of its release, social media users expressed their fatigue with the Detroit MC.

Hot 97's Ebro Darden came to Eminem's defense. In fact, he compared Eminem's navigation of the rap genre to Black people's navigation of life as a whole. As expected, his take did not go over well.

"Eminem treats Rap how Black folks have had to treat life," Ebro said. "Be 5x better, work 5x harder than everyone and still not necessarily get respect."

Social media users quickly replied that Eminem is one of the world's most successful artists. To which Ebro responded that "sales doesn't mean respect."

Ebro continued, saying "you can absolutely hate Eminem musically. What you cannot say as a HipHop fan is that [he] is a wack rapper."

Eminem has received a ton of backlash with the release of Music to Be Murdered To. The video for the lead single, "Darkness," depicts the Route 91 Harvest festival massacre in Las Vegas. In 2017, gunman Stephen Paddock fired over 1,000 shots into the crowd over the course of 15 minutes. More than 800 people suffered injuries in the attack. Paddock committed suicide shortly after opening fire. The shooting is the deadliest mass shooting by an individual in American history.

On Thursday, Eminem released a statement defending his depiction of the tragedy. In a statement on Twitter.
