Can Black Panther take home the Best Picture Oscar?
Marvel’s gigantic hit Black Panther took home the Best Cast Ensemble prize at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Award on Sunday night (January 28th.) It’s the first time a superhero movie has taken home the top prize at the SAG awards.
And it’s the clearest indication that Black Panther is in the running for the Best Picture Oscar at the 2019 Academy Awards next month.
The starring cast took the stage to accept the award. Chadwick Boseman, who played T’Challa, gave a speech where he said: “We knew that we had something special, that we could create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see:”
Black Panther beat out Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians, BlacKkKlansman, A Star Is Born. (It should be noted that the current favorite to win the Best Picture Oscar is Roma, which was not nominated for the Best Cast Ensemble award.) Black Panther also won the Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture award.
Other big winners included Rami Malek, who won best actor for Bohemian Rhapsody; Mahershala Ali, who took home supporting role award for Green Book; and Emily Blunt who won a supporting award for A Quiet Place.
Examples of the Outstanding Performance by a cast predicting the Best Picture Oscar include Spotlight in 2015, Birdman in 2014, Argo in 2012 and The King’s Speech in 2010.
