The RZA and Pharrell Williams Have Earned their First Emmy Nominations

Pharrell the RZA earned nominations for their contributions to two streaming series.

On Tuesday, the Television Academy revealed its full list of nominees for the upcoming 72nd annual Emmy Awards. Shows like HBO's Watchmen and Succession led the field with over a dozen nominations each. Additionally, some familiar names like RZA and Pharrell have made the list.

Netflix's June 2019 film The Black Godfather told the story of music executive Clarence Avant. Super-producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo provided an original song, "Letter To My Godfather," for the film.

The song is nominated for Original Music and Lyrics. "Letter To My Godfather" is up against "All For Us," from the HBO series Euphoria's And Salt the Earth Behind You, "Eat Sh!t, Bob," from HBO's Last Week Tonight With John Oliver episode 629, "Build It Up" from Hulu's Little Fires Everywhere, "One Less Angel" from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, "Memorized" from NBC's This is Us, and "The Way It Used to Be" from HBO's Watchmen.

"Clarence Avant connects us all through his incredible impact since before I was born up until now," he said in a statement. "He's the godfather to so many of us--and not just African-Americans, most of the industry."

In addition to Pharrell, the RZA earned a nomination in the Original Main Title Theme Music category. RZA's score for Hulu's Wu-Tang: An American Saga series will compete against Amazon Prime's Carnival Row, Apple TV+'s Defending Jacob, and Netflix's Hollywood and Unorthodox.

The 72nd Emmy Awards will air September 20 on ABC.
