The resemblance is uncanny.
Last November, it was announced that Mr. Robot star Rami Malek was going to play iconic Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in an upcoming biopic.
On Tuesday, September 5th — which would also have been Mercury’s 71st birthday — Entertainment Weekly released the first image of Malek as the iconic rock star. And the resemblance is jarring. As you can see above, Malek looks exactly like Mercury.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Malek said:
“When you’re able to open your eyes and see a different person staring back at you in the mirror…It’s a very affirming moment.”
The movie, which is named after the classic Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody,” will be directed by Bryan Singer, and has a tentative release date of Christmas 2018. According to EW, Bohemian Rhapsody will follow the birth of the band until the infamous Live Aid concert in 1985.
