Oscars 2022 Nominations: 'Dune,' 'Summer of Soul' & Will Smith Are the Big Winners

On Tuesday morning, Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan announced the Oscars 2022 nominations ahead of next month's 94th Academy Awards.

With just one more month until the Oscars 2022, contenders in last year's top films won't have to wait any longer. Being held on March 27th at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the 94th Academy Awards will likely adhere to social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Tuesday morning, Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan announced the nominees for next month's Oscars ceremony via livestream.

Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog and Denis Villeneuve's Dune were the biggest winners, with the Netflix western garnering 12 nominations while the sci-fi epic picked up 10 nominations. Both movies also got Best Picture nominations.

In news particularly exciting for Okayplayer readers, Questlove's Summer of Soul, the film centering the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, was nominated for Best Documentary Feature.

While in the Best Actor category, Will Smith (King Richard) and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) will have showdown. It should be noted that in the 2001 there was a similar showdown, with Washington being nominated for Training Day going against Smith, who was nominated for Ali. Washington would take home the statue that year, while Smith is the favorite this year.

This year, Danny Glover and Samuel L. Jackson will also receive special honors by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Glover will be receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award with the Academy calling Glover a "lifelong community activist" in a statement for his efforts in advocacy and justice. Jackson will be receiving a Governors Award along with Elaine May and Liv Ullmann.

On Sunday, March 27, the 94th Academy Awards broadcast will air live at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
