Releasing on February 5 on Netflix, the film by Sam Levinson explores the relationship between Washington, a filmmaker, and his girlfriend. It centers around conversations the couple has on past experiences dating prior to their pairing after they attended a film premiere.
The highly-anticipated movie was one of the first to be written and shot during the COVID-19 pandemic. Per Variety, the production team followed “great precautions to keep the set in compliance with COVID-19 protocols and to gain approval from Hollywood unions.”
Levinson, the writer, creator and director of Euphoria has been lauded for his masterful eye and immense attention to detail. Zendaya and Washington are executive producers on the project.
Beyond her starring role in Malcolm & Marie, in September Zendaya became the youngest Emmy winner in the best lead actress in the drama series category for her role in Euphoria playing the teen character Rue. Washington’s most recent work includes a role in the widely critiqued Tenet by Christopher Nolan. He also starred as the lead actor in Spike Lee’s celebrated BlacKkKlansman which released in 2018.
Malcolm & Marie was purchased for $30 million during the Toronto International Film Festival. At the time of the sale, Levinson shared, “I am so grateful to this cast and crew, many of whom are my ‘Euphoria’ family, for coming together during such uncertain times.” He also added, “We felt privileged to be able to make this film together and we did so with a lot of love. We are all thrilled that it has ended up with Netflix which is unparalleled in allowing filmmakers the freedom to tell their stories that reach audiences all over the world.”
Kid Cudi and Yariv Milchan are credited as executive producers. Additional producers include Kevin Turen and Ashley Levinson on behalf of Little Lamb Productions.
