"That's a wrap. Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer,” director Todd Phillips wrote on Instagram under photos of Gemanotta and Phoenix in their Joker costumes. “From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together."
Slated to release in October 2024, the Joker sequel will be a ”full-blown musical,” according to Phillips. While additional details about the film are currently under wraps, it’s expected to be just as dark as 2019’s Joker, a standalone origin story for the villain. Returning to the franchise are Zazie Beetz and Robert DeNiro, while Catherine Keener, Brenden Gleeson and Francis Conroy also join. The film will follow Phoenix’s next two films, Beau Is Afraid and Napoleon, both set to release this year. Germanotta, who won an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2019, last portrayed Patrizia Reggiani in 2021’s House of Gucci.
In an interview with Variety, Joker composer Hildur Guðnadóttir discussed the film’s musical direction.
“It’s an interesting decision,” he said. “And I think it’s really exciting to see how it unfolds. And I think it’s somehow logical at the same time. It’s both logical and also very surprising. For me as well as the audience. So far it’s just been a really beautiful conversation and I’m really excited to see how it unfolds.”
