According to Consequence, Ye was the A Tribe Called Quest member that got away. The "Blood Stain" rapper joined Drink Champs for an upcoming episode where he explains the missed opportunity, where the artist formerly known as Kanye West almost joined after ATCQ member Phife Dawg died in 2016.
“Here’s something to go viral,” Cons tells DJ EFN and N.O.R.E in a clip. “What many people don’t know is Kanye was, at one point, was supposed to join Tribe for the last album.”
N.O.R.E. asks, “When Phife was alive?” Cons replies, “No,” to which Noreaga responds, “Phife had passed away.” Conscontinues, “Kanye was going to join Tribe.”
Last month, Cons also confirmed the news to HipHopDX, which he will share more about in the Drink Champs episode. “Initially after Phife Dawg passed away in March of 2016, there were several conversations and sessions to insert Kanye into A Tribe Called Quest for the final LP, We got it from Here…Thank You 4 Your service.”
Although Ye did not join ATCQ, he did contribute vocals to their 2016t track, "The Killing Season." Ultimately, it was ATCQ members Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Jarobi White that were left to complete their sixth studio album We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service with posthumous vocals from Phife. Also featured on the album were André 3000, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak and Cons.
