Turns out that Jordan Peele had a much more bleak ending in mind for Get Out.
Speaking with BuzzFeed's Another Round's hosts Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton, Peele revealed that there were several alternate endings for his directorial film debut, most of which were drastic departures from the one offered in the movie.
The discussion is brought up when one of the hosts tells Peele how she heard from someone that a different ending for Get Out existed, in which protagonist Chris is apprehended by police and sent to jail for the rest of his life for murdering the Armitage family.
"I prefer the one that's in the theaters," Peele said. "There were several endings of this movie — several of them were pretty dark...I was trying to figure out what the best one was."
According to the interview, this alternate ending would have probably been the one Peele had chosen for the movie if it came out during Barack Obama's presidency. But he ultimately went with the one seen in theaters, where Chris' friend Rod comes to his rescue.
"It was very clear that the ending needed to transform into something that gives us a hero, that gives us an escape, gives us a positive feeling when we leave this movie," Peele added. "There's nothing more satisfying than seeing the audience go crazy when Rod shows up."
