Jay-Z has served as chief brand strategist of a California cannabis company for a year now.
Last July, Jay-Z was named Chief Brand Strategist for Caliva, a California-based cannabis company. The role was designed for Jay to focus on social justice issues surrounding the industry, like legalization and opening paths for people previously-incarcerated over weed convictions. On Friday, Jay announced his first legal marijuana line, called Monogram Company.
“Anything I do, I want to do correctly and at the highest level,” Jay said in a statement. “With all the potential in the cannabis industry, Caliva’s expertise and ethos make them the best partners for this endeavor. We want to create something amazing, have fun in the process, do good, and bring people along the way.”
It is unclear where Monogram products will be available, and whether the product will be available in states outside of California. Monogram will also reportedly launch a “best in class e-commerce platform dedicated exclusively to its singular product line.”
Jay-Z is just the latest in a long line of rappers getting involved in the legal weed business. In recent years, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Freddie Gibbs and Juicy J have all launched signature strains. B-Real of Cypress Hill recently launched a dispensary in California named Dr. Greenthumb’s.
“Monogram marks a new chapter in cannabis,” the official website reads, “defined by dignity, care and consistency. It is a collective effort to bring you the best, and a humble pursuit to discover what the best truly means.”
