HBO Max Lands Exclusive Streaming Rights to 'South Park' and 'Rick and Morty'

The streaming service launches in May 2020.

HBO Max is the new home for the holy trinity of irreverent animated comedy.

In a live-streamed launch announcement this week, Warner Media revealed its forthcoming streaming arm of not-just-TV won the bidding war for South Park‘s streaming rights (rumored to have reached north of $500 million,) as well as those of Adult Swim’s off-kilter sci-fi darling, Rick and Morty. During his presentation, HBO’s Chief Content Officer, Kevin Reilly, noted all previous seasons of both shows will be made available exclusively on the streaming platform upon launch, with new episodes added within 24-hours of airing on Comedy Central and Adult Swim, respectively.

The shows will join The Boondocks, which was picked up by HBO Max for two additional seasons earlier this year. However, with the recent passing of comedian John Witherspoon, it’s unclear whether the production will move forward.

HBO Max is set to go live in May 2020. A precise date has yet to be revealed, but the price point is fixed at $14.99 for current HBO subscribers.
