DMX Wants to Square Off Against JAY-Z in A 'Verzuz' Instagram Live Battle

The two have a long history of head-to-head matchups.

On Wednesday morning, Noreaga posted a clip from an upcoming episode of Drink Champs. Joined by DMX on a video call, he summarized the concept of Swizz Beatz and Timbaland's Verzuz series. Naturally, the conversation progressed to who DMX would want to do battle against. To many hip-hop heads, the answer was less-than-surprising.

"Jay," he responded, without much hesitation. "Are we saying JAY-Z?" Noreaga responded, looking for clarity.

"Yeah," DMX reiterated, "who you think, nigga?"

DJ EFN asked, "It's only picking up where you guys already left off, right?"

"There you go," DMX replied, "that'd be battle number three."

It wouldn't be the first time the two squared off. In 1993, before either of their careers really took off, they faced off in a freestyle battle in the Bronx that allegedly lasted for hours. Dame Dash recounted the events in an interview with Quincy Jones III.

"Jay and DMX battled for hours," Dame said, "guns were pulled out. It was very tense but it was real hip-hop. Nothing happened, we all kinda had admiration for each other because we had an equal amount of respect."

Six years later, the two traded bars once again. This time, the cipher took place backstage at Roc-A-Fella's Hard Knock Life tour.

Stay tuned to see if the battle picks up any momentum.
