Deadline was able to talk to DuVernay briefly. The Selma-director told the publication:

Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses…The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate.

The Prince estate will be providing DuVernay with archival information and unreleased material.

According to Deadline, DuVernay not only has the support of the Prince Estate. She actually had the support of Prince himself. Before the icon died, Prince reached out to the director to collaborate.

DuVernay has already made two documentaries centered around music: This Is the Life and My Mic Sounds Nice.
