AZ Explains Why He Changed His Diet: “I stopped with the red meat”
The 54-year-old shares that as he’s gotten older, he’s had to adjust his lifestyle and prioritize his health.
AZ is opening up about changing his habits as he’s gotten older. With so many hip-hop stars who have run into serious health issues as they’ve aged, it’s become a priority for the Brooklyn rap star to sustain himself with healthy eating and living habits. And in a conversation with Ambrosia For Heads, AZ shared that it’s something that has become a bigger priority in his life.
“Now that I’m a little older, rest is everything. Eating light and correct. I stopped with the red meat. Trying to leave alone the wings and bones – I'm growing there. I’m getting there. I tried to go vegan. It lasted for like two months. Then I even did pescetarian – I did just fish.”
The 54-year-old just dropped Doe Or Die III, the third in his critically-acclaimed album series. As his career has come full circle, his health has taken center stage. He shares that his approach hasn’t always been the most consistent, but he understands the responsibility he has to himself to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
He said as much back in 2022, when he’d just turned 50.
“Health is wealth,” he said in a conversation with Blavity at the time. “As we get older, we understand the proper things to eat and hygiene, these are facts, and when you want to pass these things on because it preserves you. Self-love is always beautiful because when a person sees you take care of yourself that means you’ll take care of them. That’s how I judge people. You take care of yourself, which means if I’m in your cipher, I’ll get taken care of. Not just physically, but how a person thinks, moves and how a person deals with spirituality, you can tell the fabric of the person they are.”
He’s maintained that commitment, while being honest about his discipline and slip-ups.
“Now it’s just no red meat. [And] trying to eat once or twice a day,” AZ says. “And to hydrate your body is everything. So water is a necessity. So that’s what zone I’m in at the moment. Not perfect–but at the moment.”
