DJ Michael “5000” Watts x David Banner - The God Box (Screwed & Chopped)

Days after the release of David Banner’s highly-anticipated The God Box LP, he and DJ Michael “5000” Watts deliver an H-Town inspired take on the 14-track project with the arrival of the The God Box (Screwed + Chopped). The pitched down version of the project, ironically, gives Banner’s booming vocal an otherworldly presence on the tape reminiscent of the cinematic “Voice of God.” Combined with the timeliness of Banner’s commentary, that alone might be enough to make this joint a must listen. Just make sure you listen in your whips.

King Britt - FADER Mix: Fhloston Paradigm

Fhloston Paradigm aka King Britt invites listeners to venture deeper into the sonic side of science-fiction ahead of the release of the forthcoming AFTER… LP, with a 1-hour FADER mix. The electronic set is an exercise in high vibrational sounds that doubles as a clinic in experimental music. While there is no sneak preview of the project, some of the records that influenced it are prominent in the mix. Tracks from Kid Cudi and the Cocteau Twins rub shoulders with joints from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Herbie Hancock, Little Dragon, Mica Levi, Oneohtrix Point Never and Floating Points.

Diggs Duke - Seen It All Mixtape Series Vol. 1

Diggs Duke resurfaces with the first volume of his Seen It All mixtape series. The 7-track, 13-minute project is almost entirely performed and produced by Duke, save for one contribution from Chicago’s own Cool D. The release is consistent with Diggs Duke’s constant sonic exploration and plays at points like a window into his creative process. A couple of the original compositions in the mix reference works by Sidney Bechet, Lucy Terry and Aleksandr Scriabin. Duke’s bright falsetto also makes a cameo.

Rob Milton - Healer EP

Singer Rob Milton follows the lead single “The Threat” and an appearance on the righteous Soulvember Records single “Black Power” with the release of the Healer EP. Produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow, the emotionally dense 6-track project also boasts features from Nicholas Ryan Gant and Matthew Whitaker.

It was Nina Simone who once famously said that it is an artist's duty to reflect the times. This powerful EP finds Rob Milton honoring that mantra and legacy, while also paying homage to the project's producer, Georgia Anne Muldrow. Healer is a spiritual experience that shines a light on the darkness of depression and anxiety and encourages listeners to turn to the healing powers of music in times of need.

Southern California: remember when you first heard the likes of U-N-I, Dom Kennedy, Blu, a young Top Dawg Entertainment and a host of others? This is what this mix from MekDot is about: a soundtrack of those times, dedicated to the first incarnation of the “New West” sound.
