Sly Stone, Shirley Caesar, Ahmad Jamal, Nina Simone + More Honored with GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Awards

Well, it's official now. GRAMMYs season 2017 is now the Recording Academy's "I'm sorry" campaign, making up for years of missed calls and oversights by extending consideration to free, stream-only projects like Chance The Rapper's Coloring Book (itself a campaign to correct the course of an antiquated system.) Now the Academy knocks another couple of items off a mile-long list by announcing this year's honorees for Lifetime Achievement Awards.

This year's honorees includes legends of all creeds: Sly Stone, Nina Simone, Ahmad Jamal, Shirley Caesar, Jimmie Rodgers, Charley Pride and The Velvet Underground. How Stone, Simone, Jamal and Caesar escaped past consideration is besides the point. We're just happy to see that at least some of them are finally getting their recognition while they're still with us. The GRAMMYs will also publish a hardcover companion script for this year's presentation compiling 20 years of tributes written by fellow artists, slated to arrive early next month.

The 59th annual GRAMMY Awards will air on Sunday, February 12th, on CBS. If you've yet to brush up on this year's nominees, jump back and get acquainted.
