Titled Shangri-La, the series will be directed by Morgan Neville (the director of the Mr. Rogers documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor) and will highlight Ruben's creative process and accomplishments throughout his career. A synopsis of the series via Pitchfork, is as follows:

"Rubin's creative process, giving viewers a taste of what it's like to be produced by the music world's most singular voice."

The series is set (and named after) Rubin's Malibu, California recording studio. A "work-in-progress" cut will be shown at the 2019 SXSW Festival, while the full version will air later on in the year on Showtime. Rubin will serve as an executive producer alongside Neville for Shangri-La.

Two years ago, Rubin interviewed Kendrick Lamar at the his Shangri-La recording studio, where the rapper talked about the music his parents played at home and getting introduced to jazz music by Terrace Martin.

"It's a trip, because I was in the studio one day, and my guy Terrace Martin noticed something about the type of sounds that I was picking. He was like, Man, a lot of the chords that you pick are jazz-influenced. You don't understand: You a jazz musician by default. And that just opened me up," Lamar said. "And he just started breaking down everything, the science, going back to Miles, Herbie Hancock."
