Mixtape Mondays: Live at The Rub, Spacek, The Marleys & More

DJ Ayres, Cosmo Baker & DJ Eleven- The Rub, Live at Southpaw (Feb. 2012)

In honor of their very last gig at Southpaw, the venue that started it all for them, The Rub DJs (DJ ElevenCosmo BakerDJ Ayers) recorded a few hours of the final appearance. If you haven't heard of The Rub, it's one of the longest-running, kick-ass, hip-hop and club classics dance parties in NYC and beyond. Southpaw is closing it's doors, but the craziness that is The Rub will continue at Bell House, which is a little bigger and has better sound. In the meantime, get your fix by streaming a few hours of the party. The Rub is dead, long live the Rub!

DJ Rahdu - Love Letter 002: Spacek Soud System Mix

Our peoples over at Bamalovesoul just dropped a buttery compilation mixtape of Spacek remixes and rarities. Here's what Bama's DJ Rahdu says about the project:

Like most, I found out about Spacek when their single "Eve" first hit the US in 2001. Their sound was completely unlike anything I heard before; leftfield, yet soulful electronic sounds anchored by the sexy, smoky vocals of Steve Smith aka Steve Spacek who I assumed was the only member of the group. Spacek was/is actually a 3-man collective including guitarist, Edmund Cavill and drummer, Morgan Zarate who has gone on to do some pleasant production respectively. Together they released 2 albums but the volume of their work, including solo albums, remixes, production and features is vast. This is our Love Letter to the brothers Spacek, delivered with hopes that there will be a new collaborative album sometime soon.

Stone Love Soundsystem - Tribute to the Marley MovementStone Love is arguably the most famous, dub-playingest reggae soundsystem in the world--and maybe the only to have their mixtapes put out as an official label release. So their Marley-themed mix to promote Jamaica's 9 Mile Festival is not a joke thing. LargeUp has the story & the audio (below).

The annual 9 Mile Festival (formerly Marley Fest) went down this past Saturday in Miami, with performances from Damian, Stephen and Julian Marley along with Burning Spear, Capleton, Melanie Fiona and others. This stellar mix from the great Stone Love begins with a commercial for that event but once things get going, though, they get going, starting with a killer Damian Marley dubplate on his “Exodus”-sampling “Move!,” followed by a Jr. Gong x Nas dub of Distant Relatives‘ “As We Enter.”

DJ JAYCEEOH - JAYCEEOH Presents Super 7 Vol. 5

Our dude Jayceeoh comes through with a grip of Okayplayer favorites on his latest Super 7 tape, which is sort of a conceptual mixtape of mixtape DJs. Heavyweights Jazzy Jeff, Z-Tripp, DJ Revolution, Vajra, Mick Boogie and Gaslamp Killer all contribute 10-minute sound collages for this latest installment, billed as "an eargasm for aficionados, a music lesson for new listeners." For real.
