Touching off in style, steady set speed, we continue on with the reggae theme as LargeUp premieres the brilliant new Major Lazer x Suns of Dub mixtape. Compiled by selector Walshy Fire--the hypest man in the Major Lazer 3-man crew, the tape is an introduction to the Suns Of Dub group/label/soundsystem comprising Ras Jammy and Addis Pablo--who as you might have guessed, is the son of dub pioneer Augustus Pablo. Highights include new-brand Bob Marley dubs as well as rising star Chronixx chatting over a dub of Major Lazer's eerie "Get Free." LargeUp has the full story, scroll down for the tracklist and click through to download
A group, record label and sound system based between Jamaica, Trinidad and New Jersey, Suns of Dub is led by Addis Pablo, son of the late great Augustus Pablo, and producer/label co-CEO, Ras Jammy. Over the last few years the unit, which also consists of artists Masia One (Canada), Jah Bami (Trinidad) and Zebulun (Trinidad) and drummer Tesfa Zion, has released a steady stream of innovative tracks blending and bridging the gap between traditional dub featuring—Addis has taken up the mantle for the melodica, the instrument his father legitimized on his landmark projects with King Tubby and his own Rockers International—and modern EDM.As he did with Chronixx last year, Walshy Fire of Major Lazer has stepped up to put things in perspective, gathering Suns of Dub’s key tracks, along with original remixes and unreleased tunes, for global consumption. Showcasing the crew’s diversity, the mix runs through Reggae, dub, dubstep, dancehall, trap, hip-hop, drum and bass and even some steelpan made in Port of Spain, Trinidad, with pannist Derron Ellies. Things start out with “Vybz Wa Yuh Feel,” a track featured in Part 2 of our Meditations video series featuring Addis Pablo and Jesse Royal (Watch Part One starring Ras Jammy and Jesse Royal here) which premieres Wednesday.
Many of Addis’ colleagues from Jamaica’s youthful reggae revival make appearances, including Chronixx, Protoje, Kabaka Pyramid, Kelissa and Jah 9, as do Bob Marley, who gets a Suns of Dub remix of “Waiting in Vain” featuring Addis’ melodica, and Slum Village (their “Fall in Love” is remixed).
Walshy and Suns of Dub being LargeUp family, they’ve given us the exclusive premiere for the project, right here. Download, listen, enjoy and look out for more Suns of Dub on LargeUp soon. They’ve already got a busy 2014 lined up, with Masia One Meets Suns of Dub at the Shiloh Temple; Addis’ solo melodica album on Dutch label JAH Solid Rock; and The Journey to Baltimore, an EP inspired by Sly and Robbie’s “Baltimore (Dub)” featuring Mikey General and Queen Omega.
Addis Pablo will also be our guest of honor at this Thursday’s extended version of The LargeUp Sessions this Thursday on RadioLily.com. Stay tuned for more details.
