Flying Lotus Hosts J Rocc, Plays Unheard Take Of His "Obligatory Cadence" On Final BBC Radio 1 Show

All good things must come to an end, and for the final installment of his BBC Radio 1 residency, Flying Lotus brought a fellow West Coast genius into his studio to help craft a brilliant bon voyage. Yes, J Rocc served as FlyLo's final guest on the program, and the Stones Throw DJ and producer augmented an already excellent program by throwing down a top-notch mix.

The program opened with Flying Lotus remarking, without a single sniffle or over-sentimental whine, that yes this is in fact the final residency show for him, but nothing but great music came quickly after that. Cuts from Parliament, William Onyeabor, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, A Tribe Called Quest, Eddie Kendricks, Fela Kuti and so many more all got a turn in the program. Rather than spinning futuristic beats (like he did with Knxwledge on a previous show) or share never-before-heard gems (from the likes of Thundercat and Joey Bada$$, as he is wont to do), Lotus kept things straightforward and throwback-ish. It's only right that he and J Rocc chose to end things by treating us to the sounds that started it all.

Those tickled by J Rocc's selections might want to check out his own recent radio show, in which Egyptian Lover took over the decks and spun plenty of 80s funk.

"Wow, wow, wow. I can't believe this is the last show, already. This year has gone by so fast, and I've had so much fun preparing these mixes for you guys," FlyLo said in the program's closing minutes. And before radio silence finally hit, the producer had one more gift for us all--an alternate, new-to-the-world version of his You're Dead! track "Obligatory Cadence." So, Lotus, thank you.
