A Historical Emmett Till Marker in Mississippi Was Vandalized

A marker on the Mississippi Freedom Trail that honors civil rights figure Emmett Till was vandalized twice in the last two months.

The first time occurred in May, when vandals scratched the marker up with a tool. And then, over the weekend, someone had peeled off the back of the marker, which contained vital photos and information about the infamous 1955 case.

Allan Hammons owns the public relations firm that made the marker and he confirmed this vandalism to NBC, saying:

He also said that it will cost about $500 to fix the sign.

The sign was put up in 2011, right outside where Bryant's Grocery & Meat Market used to be. That was the scene where, in 1955, Carolyn Bryant lied and said that Till whistled at her. A group of white men, led by her husband Roy Bryant, kidnapped Till and lynched him.

Till would become a civil rights figure when Till's mother, Mamie Till, held an open casket viewing, showing how brutal the attacks were against her son.
