D'angelo x J Dilla birthday tribute from Extra Medium

PA soulcats Extra Medium are back on the set with vocalist Selan to deliver their loving recreation of the D’angelo gem “Dreamin’ Eyes”– J Dilla‘s unofficial remix of “Dreamin’ Eyes,” to be specific–a white label classic feverishly sought and shared amongst DJs and serious music heads the way Bleek & Shadow obsessed over Miles. Okayplayer is proud to host the world premiere for this musical labor of love today, February 11th which also happens to be the birthday of Michael Eugene Arthur AKA D’angelo AKA wherefore art thou? As is self-evident in their collective designation as ‘Soulquarians‘ D’angelo’s birthday is only a few scant days after Dilla’s (February 7th) making it a double tribute, as well as an early Valentine’s Day gift. Get more from Extra Medium here, read their thoughts on the tribute below–and turn this one up for the sexy Soulquarian in your life. Happy birthday D’angelo. Rest In Percussion, J Dilla.

After the soulful release of their self-titled Extra Medium EP on Record Breakin’ Music, DJ/producer duo Sam Champ and Buscrates16-Bit Ensemble return with a freebie to honor the legend that paved the way to their love of chopped rhodes samples, crisp snares, and un-quantized bass lines. Using the same sample source material from their EP, the Extra Medium team reworks Jay Dee’s classic, unofficial remix of D’Angelo’s “Me & Those Dreamin’ Eyes Of Mine” with the assistance of singer/keyboardist Selan. At first listen, the production is so similar, you may think it’s a remastered version of the original. But when making a dedication to hip hop’s most mourned and influential producer, they decided to recreate the masterpiece to perfection. This includes Selan’s spot-on D’Angelo harmonics and ad libs from the original. Three super fans paying the utmost respect, dedication, and praise to the man that changed the way the we listen to and create music.

And as a bonus, the instrumental is available for blends, D’Angelo karaoke, and multiple rewinds/repeats.
