Wyclef Jean is back and he’s got some famous friends with him. The former Fugee has dropped his new single “Back From Abu Dhabi” with Rick Ross and French Montana.
For the track, the three cruise over cinematic beat switches as they get off some of their typically self-mythologizing bars. It’s flexing, but it feels like there’s a purpose to it.
The single artwork is from a new collaboration between Clef and British-Nigerian artist/ designer Yinka Ilori MBE, curated and driven by 12on12, the drop-culture brand that unites musicians and contemporary artists to create collectible work that tells powerful, layered stories.
Additionally, he made his debut at the Blue Note New York back in early September, tapping into his love of jazz and performing alongside a diverse array of special guests like Buju Banton, Theo Croker, Peter Gunz and more.
And he closed NYFW with a closing party presenting the HAITI TWINZ with a DJ set at Flyfish Club.
This coming February will mark two milestone anniversaries for Wyclef: celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the Fugees’ forever landmark The Score, and the 20th anniversary of his massive global hit as the writer and featured artist on “Hips Don’t Lie” with Shakira.
He’s also become an important advocate for the power of creativity. Earlier this year, Jean spoke about the importance of music and education programs as he was honored by Music Will, the largest non-profit music education program for schools in the United States
“Music has the power to change lives,” he said. “It changed mine, and through these music programs, we’re providing young people with the tools they need to find their voices, tell their stories, and connect with the world. It’s an honor to help provide that opportunity to increase access to music education, especially in my home of New Jersey and New York."
