Sherbert Gang is the new creative collective from Brian Brater and Amir H. Fallah. Most of our readers will recognize Brater as the co-founder of Rawkus Records, the indie 90s and 2000s indie heavyweight label that housed Okayplayers like Pharoahe Monch, Talib Kweli, Yasin Bey and Common. But he’s also a talented multi-instrumentalist and producer, and “Far Away” puts those skills on full display. Brater’s partner with Sherbert Gang is Los Angeles-based painter and artist Amir H. Fallah, known for his art magazine Beautiful/Decay.

While getting caught up in the colorful, wonky animated video for “Far Away,” peep Brater's complex drum programming, vocal chops and analog synths. The song is only one minute and 52 seconds, but it progresses through multiple patterns in a short amount of time. It’s far from the boom bap sound we associate with the glory years of Rawkus, but it’s satisfying nonetheless. “Far Away” is a promising taste from the Sherbert Gang EP, which will feature original songs with drum programming and production from Brater and visual creative direction and animation production from Fallah.
