2 Chainz, Lil Wayne Pay Homage to HBCU Band Culture With “Money Maker”

2 Chainz premiered the track after his Verzuz battle with Rick Ross.

College football season is officially back–for the time being–and 2 Chainz kicked things off with a track perfect for fall Saturdays. “Money Maker,” featuring Lil Wayne, pays tribute to HBCU bands, even featuring a few of the most notable: Southern University’s Human Jukebox, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University’s Marching 100, as well as Clark Atlanta University.

Fully committing to the theme, 2 Chainz honors his old school, Alabama State University, with his own specially-made throwback jersey. 2 Chainz played two seasons in the SWAC for the Hornets’ basketball team from 1995 to 1997, averaging a humble 2.8 points per game over his career. An efficient scorer at least, he shot a respectable 41 percent from the floor. Shortly afterwards, he transferred to Virginia State University. After his hoops career ended, he teamed up with his high school friend to form Playaz Circle.

“Money Maker” samples a viral clip of the Human Jukebox’s rendition of “Piece of My Love,” the 1988 single from Guy’s self-titled album. The track was produced by Baton Rouge native Playa Pizzle, who spoke with Genius about how the song came together.

According to Pizzle, 2 Chainz was “looking for a specific sound that I happen to love making, which is the band sound…the video of [The Human Jukebox] playing ‘Piece of My Love’ was the first video I saw.”

“As a musician from Baton Rouge, it feels great to put the Jukebox out there like that,” Pizzle continued. “Because from 6th grade until I graduated I was in the marching band. Every single band director I ever had was a former SU band member and I really learned how music is supposed to sound. But most importantly for me, hopefully people will notice the different styles of production coming from my city.”
