Elton John has a hip-hop hot take.
The musician sat down with Q-Tip on Thursday’s (March 21) special edition episode of his Beats 1 radio show, “Rocket Hour.” and called A Tribe Called Quest “the seminal hip-hop band of all time.”
The two legends met in New York to play and talk about the music they love. The conversation is jam-packed with stories and tidbits of what the pair are working on.
A standout moment is when Elton John goes on to call A Tribe Called Quest “the seminal hip hop band of all time,” telling Tip, “There’s something about A Tribe Called Quest that was so cool. It was so kind of laid back but it was so funky. You were unlike any other hip-hop band.”
Tip also talks about late Tribe member, Phife Dawg, and explains the period when the group began to part ways, saying, ” It gets to the point like it’s a marriage as everybody says. It got a little funky there but we always loved each other we all grew up with each other and plus the times were changing. When we started it was more of a group thing, and then years later it’s a very trendy thing in hip hop where it got to be a solo man’s game. It just happened, but we did okay.”
At another point, Tip talks about meeting Little Richard for the first time in LA in 1988, and John shares how he used to attend hip-hop shows in Europe. “I remember starting out seeing bands like NWA and Public Enemy in London at the Hammersmith Odeon. And then De La Soul and people like that,” he said, adding, “there’s something wonderful about you guys coming together.”
Q-Tip also revealed that he’s working on three solo records, as well as a project with Mary J Blige and one with Danny Brown.
