Watch A Tribe Called Quest Perform 'Dis Generation' On Jimmy Kimmel Live
A Tribe Called Quest
A Tribe Called Quest further cemented their legacy with a powerful month in November, and they rounded out the year with another memorable late-night performance this week.
The group – Q-Tip, Jarobi White, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, with extended family Busta Rhymes – appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday night. They performed “Dis Generation,” a song from their new album We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. They also paused to point in the sky to pay homage to Phife Dawg, the founding group member who died in March from complications from diabetes.
We Got It From Here… is A Tribe Called Quest’s final full-length album, and their first in 18 years. The members attempted to reunite several times since their last album The Love Movement in 1998, but they were inspired to give it another shot after a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in November 2015. Phife Dawg was reported to have come up with the title.
The album was released on Friday, Nov. 11, coinciding with a pop-up shop of merchandise in New York City and a memorable set of performances on a Dave Chappelle-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live. It topped the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with 112,000 units in its opening week, their first no. 1 debut since their Beats, Rhymes and Life LP in 1996.
The following weekend, a block in the Saint Albans neighborhood of Queens, New York City was co-named after Phife Dawg. The intersection is at Linden Boulevard and 192nd Street, the block where Phife grew up and across from the building where the group recorded their video for “Check The Rhime.”
