Harlem Reacts To The Harlem Shake

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Special delivery! Schlepp Films brings us a man-in-the-street (125th street, specifically) view on current trends as ordinary Harlem residents share their reactions ("aww...NO GOOD"), choreographic tips ("there's actually a sense of...rhythm? that goes along with it") and some NYC geographical pointers ("That's West 4th street dancing.. nobody in Harlem would do that!") to the dancers in the various installments of the ongoing viral video meme that our dude Baauer's undeniable trap-door monster "The Harlem Shake" has recently inspired. I'm not going to revisit the whole meme here but suffice to say it has gone from comical to out of control in the space of two short weeks and if there was any doubt whether it was maybe time for it to stop now, Fat Joejumped on the shark and smothered it to death. This 5-minute video is worth it just for the expressions on the faces of these unsuspecting Uptowners as cultural worlds collide before their eyes. For those of you who never encountered the phrase Harlem Shake before this web phenom, Professor Locke (sp?) will show you how to do the original, Diddy and G. Dep-era Harlem Shake in the instructional vid at bottom.
