There have been a lot of takes on this whole Jessie Williams/Justin Timberlake thing. And rightfully so, as the popstar’s response to Williams’ impassioned, poignant and simply brilliant BET Awards acceptance speech strikes at the very core of Black Live Matter and the battle, figurative and literal, to secure equal rights and protections under the law for all black men, women and children.
Last night, Def Jam artist and Kanye West protege, Vic Mensa, joined the crew of The Nightly Show to dissect the claims of cultural appropriation against Justin Timberlake and his walk-back of comments tweeted out at the very conclusion of Williams’ empowering oration. It serves as a deceptively deep analysis of what white people can do to assist — or not — in the this continued struggle. For the record, Timberlake has since apologized (swiftly, at that) but it remains to be seen just how this has affected his star power in the aftermath. Realistically, we don’t imagine we’ll be hearing from him again until he’s ready to put out a new project. Watch as Vic Mensa and The Nightly Show crew dive deep into the issue(s) down below.
