Tinashe Struts With New Single "All Hands On Deck," Live On Conan

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Tinashe's artistic double life continues. The Los Angeles-based R&B artist appeared live on Conan last night, performing her new single "All Hands On Deck," which we first heard on her marvelous 2014 debut LP Aquarius. The track is a club-friendly slice of modernity, deploying the same sparse synth-and-snaps approach that made her smash hit "2 On" a go-to for parties across the globe. In the live performance we're treated to a not-quite-full-band rendition of "All Hands On Deck," along with some seriously athletic dance moves from the 22 year-old songwriter. Tinashe's Conan performance is a reassuring sign that the pressure of a live setting is something she can full well handle--the young lady's confidence seems to flourish with every step.

Still, for some Tinashe still stands as a sort of conundrum. Apart from "All Hands On Deck" and the aforementioned "2 On," her catalog occupies the sort of slow, woozy and washed-out R&B space that has become hyper-fashionable as of late. Hip-hop features abound, but the main ideas running Tinashe's music still seem more concerned with broken-hearted bedroom seclusion than the world of DJ booths and neon lights. Fans of the textured and introspective moments on Aquarius (and there are a great many) might be bemused by the singer's more predictable radio singles. Still, Tinashe excels at both stylings, however, and is surely one of the brightest rising stars in R&B today--if you haven't already checked her new Amethyst mixtape, now is the time to do so. Watch Tinashe's performance of "All Hands On Deck" live on Conan below, and also be sure to treat yourself to the track's official video, which just dropped yesterday.
