Throwback Thursday: Watch A Daisy-Fresh De La Soul Perform On Dutch TV In 1989
For all of us that wish they time travel back to the golden age of hip-hop, a mesmerizing 20 minute video of De La Soul performing live on Dutch television has recently surfaced--and it dates back to 1989.
The clip features the D.A.I.S.Y. posse performing cuts from 3 Feet High And Rising, which was released less than a month before the show was shot. As the young trio of Pos, Dov and Maseo command the stage as images of flowers and peace signs flow across the video feed and sign-holders raise posters emphasize their rhymes. Yes, this is 1989 alright and no it ain't hip to label them hipppies.
The video was shot for a Dutch music program, VPRO's "Fa. Onrust," and marked the first time that De La Soul appeared on the airwaves in Holland. The group performs "The Magic Number", "Plug Tunin" and "Me Myself And I" before sitting down for a brief interview, in which the three young Native Tongues explain, once again, what all the peace and love messages (and necklaces) are all about. It's both an amazing throwback time capsule and a dynamite performance--pure bliss for anyone who gets a little misty-eyed and nostalgic for the good old days. Watch the full 20 minute segment below be on the lookout for more throwback gems.
