'Star Wars' Fans Sign Petition To Make Leia An Official Disney Princess

Carrie Fisher, Princess Leia in 'Star Wars,' Dies At 60

Star Wars fans have created a petition in hopes of getting Disney to make Princess Leia into an official Disney Princess.

The petition is in honor of actress and writer Carrie Fisher, who recently passed away at the age of 60 from a heart attack. Cody Christensen, the creator of the petition, summarized why Fisher's iconic character should be made into a Disney Princess on the petition's page.

"After the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, we feel that it is only fitting for Disney to do away with the rule that an official Disney princess must be animated and make Leia a full-fledged princess. This would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie and a welcoming to one of Disney's new properties that is beloved by millions. What we are asking is that the Walt Disney Corporation hold a full ceremony inducting Leia as the newest Disney princess as well as a special service in memory of Carrie Fisher."

The petition has currently received over 57,000 signatures in a week, nearing its goal of 75,000 signatures. The petition is addressed to Disney's CEO, Bob Isner.

Transforming Princess Leia into a Disney Princess would truly be a fitting tribute not only for the character but for Fisher. Prior to her death Fisher had just completed filming her scenes for the forthcoming Star Wars VIII film, which has her reprising her role as the princess of Alderaan.

A number of friends wrote of Fisher following her death, including Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill.

"Carrie was one-of-a-kind who belonged to us all — whether she liked it or not. She was OUR Princess, damn it, & the actress who played her blurred into one gorgeous, fiercely independent & ferociously funny, take-charge woman who took our collective breath away," Hamill said. "I am grateful for the laughter, the wisdom, the kindness & even the bratty, self-indulgent crap my beloved space-twin gave me through the years. Thanks Carrie."
