Solange Live On Le Grand Journal + European Tour Diary Pt. 1

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Not too long after her London performance at XOYO, Solange swung through the continent to alight at French talk show Le Grand Journal and perform her single "Losing You" --alongside her musical partner Devonte Hynes (of Blood Orange) on guitar, Charlift's Patrick Wimberly on drums and the rest of the live band.  While she was performing in Paris, big sister Beyoncé was way across the pond, tearing it up at Obama's inauguration. Solange tweeted at the time "I couldn't be more proud on this day." Between gigs on the European tour, FADER mag caught up with Solange, to discuss meeting Dev's family, her knowledge of British r&b, and her tour attire. Watch her Le Grand performance, read some of her thoughts below and jump to FADER at the bottom for the full interview and pictures (taken by Jackie Dewe Matthews) from the tour. Also, be sure to check out her recently announced US tour dates.

What’s the best part about playing in Europe?

This is my first time playing Europe in almost four years. I was super psyched to get back over and sing the new songs. The best part about playing in Europe is getting to see people I saw at my very first gig touring my first record, Solo Star, still rocking with me now. There’s a guy named Richard Porter, who’s been at every single one of my UK gigs. Seeing that kind of connection to your music is a beautiful reward.

Dev from Blood Orange is British and he’s in your touring band—has he played tour guide at all?

I’ve spent a great deal of time in London, and have a ton of friends there so I’m pretty well knowledgable in my London spots. But I was super psyched that I finally got to meet his parents and sister! We’ve spent so much time together the last few years and he’s become like family, so it was so awesome to finally meet his. That was a highlight for the both of us.
