Sign A Petition To Establish Prince's Paisley Park As A National Historic Landmark
Paisley Park is in your heart
Like The Beatles and Abbey Road or Jimi Hendrix and Electric Lady Studios, Prince and Paisley Park are an iconic pairing, virtually inseparable. The Chanhassen, Minnesota home, studio and performance space was built erected in 1988 and has become something of a writ of passage for aspiring musicians. When the invite comes, you run, not walk. It's where the artist lived, rehearsed and congregated with the purple legion, and served as the sacred space in which several of his classics were recorded, most notably, 1988's cap on the genius period, Lovesexy.
Lest we forget, it is also the place where Prince was found dead on April 21st. With all of this in mind, it's not hard to see the importance in preserving this midwestern temple of funk in the same manner we would preserve and protect and historic landmark. And if an online petitioner has it their way, that may just be the plan. In a wonderfully thorough petition via Change.org, Paisley Park's credentials for qualification as a National Historic Landmark, meeting any and all criteria laid out by the National Park Service. And in a year where we've lost so much, including the planet that was Prince, for Paisley Park to be granted this distinguishing honor (especially with all that the estate faces moving forward) would be a massive gesture of commemoration, restoring at least the perception of balance on the universal scale.
