Revive's List Of Miles Davis' Best "Stella By Starlight" Performances
Earlier this week, an unheard live take of Miles Davis performing Victor Young's standard "Stella By Starlight" was unearthed. But when the homies over at Revive caught wind of this rarity (scraped off the upcoming fourth installment of Miles Davis At Newport: 1955-1975) they went to work on a list of the four other, lovely live and studio moments in which the jazz giant performed Young's perhaps best known composition, and all with muscular accompaniment from the likes of Herbie Hancock, George Coleman, Ron Carter, Tony Williams and other luminaries.
And while this, by no means, is a definitive hierarchy, it is a damn good recounting of some of the legend’s brightest free-bop freakouts on a tune that has stood the test of time, and should inspire continued listening amongst heads.
