If all you know of Ray Angry is his keyboard work with The Roots, then you know less than half of the story. Angry continues to record as a solo artist, and is easily one of the most respected and capable pianists in modern jazz--his R&B-infused ballad and hard swing numbers are thrilling sonic experiences. Today, a brand new sampling of his jazz work has come online in the form of "Celebration Of Life Suite: Awakening." Premiered earlier by Vibe Magazine, the track features the talents of The Council of Goldfinger, an ad-hoc assemblage of virtuosos including saxophone colossus Chris Potter, vocalist Nadia Washington, bass legend James Genus and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts. The track is a searching jazz ballad that boils over to become a borderline riot, and serves as the most recent foretaste of the Supreme Sonacy LP, a modern jazz compilation put together by Revive Music, meant to showcase just how vital the world of jazz remains, today.
Comprised of new pieces from some of the most important jazz artists today, including Brandee Younger, Marcus Strickland, Keyon Harrold and many more, Supreme Sonacy will be jointly released by Revive and Blue Note Records on August 7th. Pre-order it on iTunes today and listen to Angry's "Celebration of Life Suite: Awakening" below. Jazz lives. Jazz thrives.
